Prior to this position, she served as Director of the Capacity Building Division, where she was responsible for pooling the necessary capabilities of Member States and agencies to conduct operations at the external borders, in the pre-border area and in third countries and for their management. Before joining Frontex, she was Director of Operations and Head of Training Unit at CEPOL, the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Training.

Aina Kalnaja has professional experience gained while working in various public administration positions in the State Police of Latvia, including: as Deputy Chief Constable, UK Police Secretary in London and Head of the Sirene Bureau.
