An Italian politician and lawyer began his government career in 2008, taking up the post of Minister for Regional Affairs, which he held until 2011. After several years of experience in national administration, he re-emerged as Minister for European Affairs, Territorial Cohesion and Southern Regions between 2022 and 2024, while being responsible for the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Since taking office as Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, he has focused on coordinating the implementation of the recovery and resilience programmes of economies under NextGenerationEU, taking into account the needs of local communities, urban development and the reduction of regional inequalities. As European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, he supports investments and reforms that strengthen the economies and societies of the European Union, while ensuring the balanced development of all regions.
