A local government official and lawyer, she has been the Mayor of Gdańsk since 2019. She studied law at the University of Gdańsk (2006) and the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (2004–2005). She began building her experience in local government in 2006 alongside the Mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, serving as his assistant. She participated in Gdańsk's preparations for UEFA EURO 2012™ (2008–2009) and was involved in the creation of the European Solidarity Centre (2009–2014). In March 2017, she became the Deputy Mayor for Economic Policy.On January 13, 2019, she assumed the duties of Acting Mayor of the City of Gdańsk. Following her election victory, she was sworn in on March 11, 2019, becoming the first woman in history to hold the office of Mayor of Gdańsk. She serves as the President of the Board of the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area. She is a member of the board of the Union of Polish Metropolises foundation and serves as a Polish delegate to the European Committee of the Regions, an advisory body to the EU.In October 2019, on behalf of the residents of Gdańsk, she accepted the Princess of Asturias Award (often referred to as the Spanish Nobel Prize) in the Concord category. The jury recognized that the past and present of Gdańsk express sensitivity to solidarity, the defense of freedom, human rights, and the protection of peace.
