Member of the Polish Parliament, Deputy Chair of the National Defence Committee Member of the Sejm since 2007, currently Deputy Chair of the National Defence Committee and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Standing Sub-Committee on Foreign Cooperation and NATO. She chairs the Polish delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and is Vice-Chair of the Polish-Iraqi Parliamentary Group. She served as Minister of National Education (2013–2015) in Donald Tusk’s government and as Minister of Labour and Social Policy (in 2007) in Jarosław Kaczyński’s government. An activist in the anti-communist opposition, a member of the Independent Students’ Association, a reporter for the underground press, and, following the country’s democratisation, a journalist for influential magazines such as *Tygodnik Solidarność*, the monthly *Konfrontacje*, and the weeklies *Wprost* and *Nowe Państwo*. She worked as a foreign correspondent, including in Bosnia and Chechnya. She was also involved in investigative journalism. She was the first deputy editor-in-chief of "Przyjaciółka", Poland’s most widely read women’s weekly. She served as the Mayor of Warsaw’s representative for women and family affairs and, in the role of Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, took over the responsibilities of the Government Plenipotentiary for Equal Status of Women and Men. She has been associated with the Civic Platform since 2011. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at the University of Warsaw..
