A British physician of Polish descent, immunologist, and academic leader. From October 1, 2010, to October 1, 2017, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He was also the Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council (MRC), a British medical research agency. Leszek Borysiewicz’s scientific work focuses on viral immunology, infectious diseases, and virus-induced malignancies. He has co-authored and co-edited numerous books on these topics, including publications on protective vaccinations. For his scientific achievements, he has received many awards and distinctions. He has also served as the Chair of the Wellcome Trust, a board member and Chair of Cancer Research UK, a founding fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and co-chair of the MRC stem cell advisory group. He is also one of the founders of The Learned Society of Wales.In 2010, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Sheffield. In 2018, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Białystok, and a year later, he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. On April 10, 2019, he accepted an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University. In 2024, he was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) for services to cancer research, clinical trials, medicine, and charity.
