Małgorzata Anna Bieńkowska, PhD, Professor at the University of Białystok – sociologist, borderlands researcher, Dean of the Faculty of Sociology at the University of Białystok and Head of the Department of Sociology of Culture. She is actively involved in academic and organizational work. She is a member of the University of Białystok Committee for Ethics in Scientific Research, the Association for Borderlands Studies, and the Main Board of the Polish Sociological Association. She is also a member of the 100 Years of Women Association and the Podlaskie Women’s Council. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of Borders in Globalizations Review and is Deputy Editor of Studia Podlaskie. She has organized numerous academic events, including the 19th National Congress of Sociology (Białystok, 2025) and a series of conferences on the sociology of borderlands, held in Białystok since 1995. Among the international meetings she has organized are Identity and Identity Needs Among Culturally Diverse Communities of the Eastern EU Borderland (2019) and Relations on the Borderlands: Old and New Inhabitants (2021). In 2023, she co-organized the anniversary conference The Role of the University in the Borderland, and a year later she was one of the initiators of the 1st Congress of Border and Borderlands Researchers. The second edition of the event was held on 7–9 September at the University of Białystok. She is the author and co-author of numerous publications on the sociology of borderlands, identity, multiculturalism, research ethics, gender studies, and the resilience of borderland communities. Her most important publications include Borderology: Cross-disciplinary Insights from the Border Zone: Along the Green Belt (Springer, 2019, co-editor), Resilience as a Theoretical Framework for Analyzing the Polish-Belarusian Border During the Migration Crisis (2024), The Role of the University in the Borderland (2025, co-authored with E. Sadanowicz), and Transsexualism in Poland: The Individual and Social Dimensions of Crossing the Binary Gender System (2012).
